Wolf Popper Proudly Sponsors, Exhibits and Partner, Chet Waldman, will speak on “Surprise Healthcare Bill Regulatory and Litigation Developments” at the 2023 Opal Group Investment Education Symposium In Conjunction with the Louisiana Trustee Education Council (LATEC) at the Royal Sonesta New Orleans in New Orleans, LA on February 16, 2023 from 10:00am - 10:30am.

A surprise bill is an unexpected bill for services received from a health care provider who you did not know was out-of-network to your health insurance plan until you were billed.  Typically, a patient receives services at an in-network facility, or from an in-network provider, and then later on receives a bill from an out-of-network provider who was part of the treatment and that the patient did not choose (for example, it could be a radiologist who examined x-rays, a pathologist who examined a biopsy, or an anesthesiologist who put a patient under for surgery).  The medical provider might then bill the patient for hundreds or thousands of dollars even after their insurance company makes a payment.  This can be very distressing to heath care consumers, and can cause them significant financial harm.

Recently, there have been legislative, regulatory, and litigation responses to surprise bills.  In this session, Chet Waldman, a litigator who has prosecuted numerous surprise bill cases on behalf of patients, will discuss these responses, and ways that patients can react when they receive surprise bills.

In this session, participants will learn to:
  • Recognize what a balance bill and surprise bill are and the severe harm they have been causing patients throughout the U.S.;
  • Recognize the situations in which patients are most susceptible to large balance/surprise medical bills;
  • Explain how new legislation can shield patients from the negative consequences of balance/surprise bills and what situations patients need to avoid to make sure they fall within the protections of the new law; and
  • Recognize things a patient should never do upon entering a physicians’ office or a hospital to help them avoid large balance/surprise medical bills.
